Shraddha Kapoor’s Haseena, Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees, Arjun Rampal’s Daddy – take a look at Bollywood’s obsession with underworld

The first look poster of Shraddha Kapoor‘s Haseena was out this morning and it took me by surprise. The puffed up face of Shraddha Kapoor has an uncanny resemblance to Haseena Parkar, the notorious crime-lord of Mumbai and sister of international don/terrorist Dawood Ibrahim. Shraddha’s real life brother Siddhanth Kapoor is essaying the role of Dawood Ibrahim and the film is directed by Apoorva Lakhia, who in the past had helmed Shootout At Lokhandwala. While the first look of the film has received a positive response from the audience, I couldn’t help but notice that this year itself, we will see at least three films based on the underworld. In fact, one has already been released in the form of Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees. Apart from that, there will be Arjun Rampal’s Daddy, which is based on the life of underworld don Arun Gawali, who was involved in the killing of Haseena Parkar’s husband. Bollywood has always been obsessed by the underworld. So we decided to take a look at five such films or film series that solidifies the fact that this genre is here to stay.
Raees
Raees
Shah Rukh Khan, for the first time in his career, played a gangster in this Rahul Dholakia’s directorial. The film was reportedly based on the life of Gujrat’s bootlegger Abdul Lateef. The film is still running in theatres and is doing great business. It also became the first Rs 100 crore grosser of 2017.
Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai series
OUTIM-1-2
In 2010, Milan Luthria delivered a blockbuster allegedly on the rivalry between Haji Mastaan and Dawood Ibrahim. The film starred Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut, Prachi Desai and Randeep Hooda in key roles. Upon release, the dialogues of the film were a rage. The film saw a sequel in Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobara, with Akshay Kumar, replacing Emraan Hashmi, however, that film failed to create magic.
Shootout series
Shoot-out

One of the most loved underworld saga, Shootout at Lokhandwala was released. This multi-starer film, based on the life of small time gangster and Dawood Ibrahim’s aide, Maya Dolas and his gang, earned rave reviews and went on to do good business at the box office. It’s sequel Shootout at Wadala, based on the life of Manya Surve and his gang, was an average performer and received mixed response from the audiences as well as critics.
Ram Gopal Varma’s Gangster series
Satya-Comapany-D-Satya-2
Ram Gopal Varma made four films on the D company, run by Dawood Ibrahim. He first made Satya, starring J D Chakravarthy and Manoj Bajpai, which was a surprise success at the box office and repeated the success with its sequel, Company, where Ajay Devgn essayed Dawood Ibrahim and Vivek Oberoi portrayed Chota Rajan. The film was a runaway success at the box office. Company’s prequel, however, namely, D and Satya 2 were disasters.
D-Day
D-Day
One of the most effective film. It is based on a hypothetical situation of what if? The film showed RAW capturing Dawood Ibrahim, played by Rishi Kapoor and bringing him back to India. The film was critically acclaimed but was a box office failure. It also starred Irrfan Khan and Arjun Rampal among others.

Apart from the above-mentioned films, there are films like Vinod Khanna’s Dayavan, Shaban Azmi’s Godmother, Sanjay Dutt’s Vasatv-The Reality, Anil Kapoor-Jackie Shroff starrer Parinda among others.
