sets or their internet connection after Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway,
the original Bonnie and Clyde stars, announced that it was La La Land
which won the Best Picture award. Celebrations rose among the La La Land
team, and I was about to switch off my Hotstar app. However I thought
may be there will be some conclusion to that funny banter going on
between the host Jimmy Kimmel and his longtime ‘rival’ Matt Damon (the
announcer greeting Ben Affleck and a ‘guest’ still cracks me up).
So I stayed on, and witnessed the most awkward moment in the history of Oscars. As the entire La La Land team came on stage to celebrate the win, and the producers were giving speeches when someone from the Academy Award team came up on stage in midst of one of the speeches, and there was some confusion going on. And then this happened…
Apparently, someone gave Warren Beatty the wrong winner’s card (he was given Emma Stone’s Best Actress win card), and even he was confused when he announced La La Land as the Best Picture. Anyways, Moonlight is this year’s Academy Award winner for the Best Picture, while La La Land has to be contend with Best Director, Best Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Song, Best Score etc. Win win for everyone, I guess. If Oscars had something like a Critics Choice award, I do have a feeling that the teams of both the movies would have gone happy…
Now I saw on Twitter that some Bollywood celebs were glad that such goofups do not happen in our award ceremonies. Well, they seem to have forgotten that our award ceremonies are not even live, and any goofups like these will surely be edited out. There is also the case the most of the nominees know who is going to win the award, so there’s that.
