Akshay Kumar calls his Canadian citizenship ‘an honorary status’; leaves us more confused!

A couple of weeks back, we had done a story on how Akshay Kumar, who is often hailed by his fans as the most patriotic of the lot in his generation, can unfortunately not vote in India because he holds a Canadian passport. As per the rules of citizenship in India, you cannot hold passports of two countries, and since he has accepted Canadian passport, he has to forego his Indian passport, thus not making him a citizen of this country. So he can’t vote in India or hold a position of power, even though he can continue to pay income tax like the rest of us.
During a recent media interaction to celebrate the success of his recent movie, Jolly LLB 2, Akshay Kumar was asked about his Canadian citizenship, to which he said – ‘it’s an honorary status’! When we did that story on his citizenship, that’s the answer we got from a source close to the actor, “Akshay has got a honorary passport from the Canadian government, but it does not mean that he has given up on his Indian citizenship.”
However in the same article, we also mentioned that Canada can only give honorary status to any celebrity only if their entire parliament approves of it, and we can’t understand why they would do so for Akshay Kumar. After all, honorary citizenship is not like honorary doctorate as such – it’s a citizenship for God’s sake! It’s another matter Canada has only offered honorary citizenship to six people, which includes the late Nelson Mandela and Malala Yousufzai, and certainly doesn’t include our very own Akshay Kumar.
In an era where Google brings the entire world (except for Area 51 and the interiors of Pentagon) right to your computer screen in a matter of a few clicks, we certainly do expect a better answer from Akshay Kumar than ‘it’s honorary’!
