Jolly LLB 2 director Subhash Kapoor reacts to Akshay Kumar replacing Arshad Warsi in the sequel
By now we all know that Akshay Kumar has replaced Arshad Warsi in Jolly LLB 2. The prequel was a huge hit and everyone thought Arshad will be retained, however director Subhash Kapoor and producers Fox Star Studios decided to bring in Akshay. This did not go down well with Arshad, however Subhash cleared the air around the whole controversy without taking any names.
In an interview to Mid-day, Subhash Kapoor said, “When I wrote the first draft of Jolly LLB, Akshay was the first actor I approached. We couldn’t work together because of date issues. The template of my film is that of a courtroom drama. Unlike the Munnabhai series where the character is the same, here, the setting remains unchanged.”
In an interview with the same tabloid, Arshad had mentioned, “It is the insecurity of the production house that they decided to go with Akshay (Kumar). It was a calculated business move by the marketing and PR team; Akshay’s presence is enough to get them publicity.”
However, both the lead actors – Arshad and Boman Irani and Amrita Rao have been replaced in Jolly LLB 2. Annu Kapoor replaced Boman as the rich, powerful and sharp defence lawyer who is determined to make Jolly lose his case. While Huma Qureshi plays Akshay’s wife in the film, Amrita Rao was Arshad’s wife in the prequel.
However, when you are working with a superstar does it increase the pressure to fall back on same old formula? Subhash Kapoor added, “Not with Akshay. He is a director’s actor. Not once did we have to go to his vanity van for a shot call. Sometimes, he’d sit around on set, and no one would say that a superstar was around. The challenge was, in fact, to find a fitting story for the sequel.
