Amitabh Bachchan’s Pink is the movie India needed the most in the year 2016, here’s why

Now that the year has come to an end with the release of much awaited Aamir Khan’s Dangal, I think it’s time we talk about  socially relevant films that released this year. Be it Udta Punjab, Dear Zindagi, Dangal, it was Amitabh Bachchan‘s Pink, which is what we needed the most in 2016. Pink was the most hard hitting film of the year as the film taught us something we knew all along and that is no means NO. It’s true that it came across effectively more so because of the performances of its star cast but Pink was not just about Amitabh Bachchan, Tapsee Pannu or even Kirti Kulhari. It is often said that movies are the mirror image of our lives and the things we deal with, in a society we live in. And it was Pink that showed us the serious issue of how a woman is perceived in their day to day lives based on the way she lives, the way she talks, what she wears, what time she goes out, the company she keeps. Being judged constantly for mere existence of yours is the worst thing that can happen to anyone and women in our society deals with it every single day.
As Amitabh Bachchan’s character says, while talking about the girls, in the film, “Hamare Yahaan Ghadi Ki Sui Character Decide Karti Hai”. Lately we have been hearing a lot about feminism and gender equality. Since childhood, girls are taught that they shouldn’t go out after a certain time, they shouldn’t wear a certain dress as those are the reasons they are molested. They are made to believe that whatever happens to them is because of their own fault. But Pink told us, rather educated us, that it’s not the girls but the boys that should be taught how to behave. As Amitabh Bachchan’s character says in the film, “Aaj Tak Hum Log Ek Galat Direction Mein Effort Karte Rahe. We Should Save Our Boys, Not The Girls. Because If We Save Our Boys Then Our Girls Will Be Safe.”
And what can I say about the performance of the legend Amitabh Bachchan. He was the perfect choice for the role of q bipolar lawyer. His nuanced, subtle and brave performance made the film more effective. His lawyer act was nowhere close to the over the top lawyers we’ve seen in Bollywood. The hard hitting dialogues in his baritone made the film and scenes more effective.
And lastly as I mentioned above it taught us all the simplest thing, no means NO. PERIOD. And we need more movies like Pink. Don’t you think?
