The Mummy trailer: More of daredevil Tom Cruise, less of the Egyptian undead
We were so excited when we learnt that they are going to reboot the Mummy franchise with none other than Tom Cruise in the lead.
We were so excited when we learnt that they are going to reboot the Mummy franchise with none other than Tom Cruise in the lead. Brendan
Fraser was great as the lead of the previous franchise, but this is Tom
freaking Cruise that we are talking about. Having already played a
vampire in An Interview With The Vampire, we know that we also already
ventured into the undead territory before. And he is not alone in his
new endeavor. He is joined by Russell Crowe, who will be playing Dr
Jekyll. For people who know their trivia, they would recognise this
character as the tragic creation of Scottish author Robert Louis
Stevenson that suffers from dual personality disorder, which makes him a
monstrous serial killer. For the uninitiated, Universal studios is
planning to make a cinematic universe, just like Marvel, only this time
with monsters. So expect a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde movie next from them,
starring Mr Crowe.
Back to the trailer that got released a few hours back, I have said in the teaser review as well, but both the trailers are giving me an idea that it is more like a Mission: Impossible than a cheesy fun-loving adventure flick like the original franchise was. The trailer starts off with Tom Cruise, who plays some kind of a soldier, escorting a sarcophagus along with few of his unit members (including The People Vs OJ Simpson’s Courtney B Vance) and Annabelle Wallis, who seems to be playing an archaeologist. The bad luck starts when the sarcophagus makes the birds attack the plane, killing the pilots. Most of Tom Cruise‘s unit members get killed, but Tom cruise allows Wallis’ character to escape using a parachute. But he doesn’t survive… or does he?
The most of the trailer is dedicated to this one scene, before Tom Cruise’s character wakes from the dead and then the Mummy resurrected as well. Interestingly, it would be Star Trek Beyond’s Sofia Boutella who would be playing the mummy this time.
