Akira box office collection day 1: Sonakshi Sinha beats Sonam Kapoor in UAE-GCC!

Akira box office collection day 1: Sonakshi Sinha beats Sonam Kapoor in UAE-GCC!

Akira fared better than Neerja…

Akira has Sonakshi Sinha beating the daylights out of many goons in the film. It is one film which can become a game changer in the industry. The actress has gone all out promoting the film. It didn’t really had a great buzz as such but the fact that it is a female centric action entertainer made people tad bit interested in the film. It’s not everyday that we get to see a woman beat up men to pulp. It’s always the superstars fighting the goons in all films. Today, it released and the figures have started to trickle in. As Akshaye Rathi (exhibitor and distributor) revealed to us EXCLUSIVELY, “Akira has had a fairly okay start. At the single screens it has opened fine, but not quite at the multiplexes. The average occupancy across India has been on the lower side, approximately 20-25 per cent (till 5 pm).” While it’s taking a slow route here, it seemed to be making some groundbreaking numbers in UAE-GCC. It has already defeated Sonam Kapoor’s Neerja in its first day income.

Trade Analyst, Taran Adarsh had tweeted the numbers saying, “#Akira opens well in UAE-GCC… Thu $ 139,000 [₹ 92.91 lacs]… Better start than #Neerja [$ 135,000].” It definitely is good news for Sonakshi. It’s really amusing to see how the GEC reason has opened up to such women centric films. Neerja made good noise there now Akira has gone a step ahead.

In the domestic circuit, as we told you already the film is expected to earn 4 crore. Earlier in the week when we spoke to our Trade expert Akshaye Rathi to predict its outcome, he had foretold 5 crore opening day and a 20 crore opening weekend. He had said, “I think bare minimum it should do, by looks of it and the buzz around, around 5 crore on opening day. Over the weekend, depending on the merit of the film, it could touch 20. I believe it’s pretty reasonably made. The COP (Cost of production) is around 13 crores. If you see the promos, there are no huge production values and all. And Sonakshi Sinha being the co-producer, wouldn’t have charged her entire fee. Anurag Kashyap as an actor would be pretty reasonable. There are no big names who would take big paycheque.”
But the reviews have not been too kind for the film. We told you what the issue with the film in our review. Akira strives too hard to become an action entertainer. There is that novelty factor of having an actress as the action lead, but somehow Sonakshi Sinha’s punches and kicks feel too rehearsed.
Hope in the coming days the film gets more love and set a trend of action entertainers with a female lead in it.
