Rs 200 crore is riding on Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil, Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees and Shraddha Kapoor’s OK Jaanu
We found out how important January 2017 will be for Bollywood with Raees, Kaabil and Ok Jaanu releasing.
2016 is drawing to a close and 2017 will open with a bang! As
is the custom, the first Friday has again got the boot next year which
falls on January 6. It’s a belief in the industry that the first Friday
of the first month of a year is generally unholy. So the first film next
year is Ok Jaanu which will releases on January 13. It will be soon
followed by the first clash of 2017, Raees vs Kaabil. We thought of finding out how much money is riding on these films next month and the answer is Rs. 150 -200 crore.
January begins with Ok Jaanu, the Hindi remake of hit Tamil film Ok Kadhal Kanmani, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur. The film doesn’t look too heavily budgeted at all as the better part of the film has been shot in Mumbai itself. When we asked trade expert Akshaye Rathi, exhibitor-distributor, about the budget, he also agreed that the film won’t be more than 30 crore
Now coming to the feuding Raees and Kaabil, Rathi says, “Between the two together, it will be 100-120 cr because Kaabil has been made on a very controlled budget.” We had spoken to him before as well on the same topic and then he had said, “I am sure Kaabil won’t cost anything less than Rs 30 crore – the actual cost of production, considering that Hrithik is an in-house hero and he won’t charge any upfront fees. Raees won’t cost less then another Rs 50-60 crore.”
You must be wondering how two films with mammoth superstars can have so less money riding on them. The logistics are pretty simple here. Both Kaabil and Raees are the home productions of Hrithik and Shah Rukh respectively. That reduces the cost of production of the film drastically.
But another trade expert Amul Vikas Mohan, Editor Super Cinema, believes that the number could change by the time January 25 arrives. “A lot is riding on the films. The clash itself is big. Both are releasing on Jan 25, means it will be a big fight. There’s still time to put on numbers on them. That’s because the marketing, P&A and whatever they are planning to do the film, we will come to know about it in couple of weeks time. Kaabil is budgeted under 60 crore or something and Raees will be around 80 crore. But these aren’t the final ones.”
As you can see, the money riding on films in January 2017 will be somewhere around 150- 200 crore. No wonder everyone is waiting the next year to begin already. What do you have to say about it?
