Katrina Kaif will be back on screen with Baar Baar Dekho and she is looking like a million bucks. This is Katrina Kaif 2.0! But she has been a game changer since her debut in 2003 erotic heist film Boom. The actress found her way into Bollywood through filmmaker Kaizad Gustad and was one of the first actress to come from a non filmy or acting background, infact she didn’t even know how to speak Hindi which is a basic necessity when it comes to acting in Hindi films.
Her first film was in news for its hot content and the fact that Amitabh Bachchan was a part of an erotic movie. The film sank without a trace and no one noticed the young debutant. As expected Katrina Kaif was written off as a non actor and just a pretty face. She didn’t give up and two years later she was seen in a small cameo in another Amitabh Bachchan starrer Sarkar. In the film she played the role of Abhishek Bachchan’s girlfriend. The film was a hit but that didn’t help Katrina much as far as career is concerned. Her next release was a David Dhawan comedy Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya?, the film was in news more for Salman and Katrina real life romance and less for her performance. The critics who still called her the pretty face with no talent, now even started alleging that she’s in the industry just because of her then boyfriend Salman Khan.
Year 2007 was a game changer for Katrina Kaif, she starred in Namastey London, in a role tailor-made for her. This was the first time critics took notice of her acting chops. The film was first true blue super hit of her career and with this started the string of hits she gave in her career from Partner, Apne, Welcome, Singh Is Kinng, Race etc.
She became the top actress of Hindi cinema but critics still discarded her. She did commercial movies like Partner to suspense thriller like Race, where she played a negative character to a serious drama like New York. She was the only actress to play roles as different as chalk and cheese. She was at the top but that didn’t stop her from diversifying, and played every kind of role possible. But there were still detractors looking to pull her down.
She didn’t care about the critics and went on to do a comedy like Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani and de glam role of a widow in Raajneeti. She was one of the first top star to do an item song in a movie and all her item songs, be it sheila ki jawani or chikni chameli have been chartbusters. She is one of the few actresses to act alongside the likes of all the three Khans of Bollywood, namely, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan. You don’t get to act with the top stars if you can’t perform.
In recent years her films may not have worked the way it used to, she may have lost her top spot to Deepika Padukone but that doesn’t stop her from trying to do her best. This year she starred in much talked about Fitoor. The movie, however was confusing and sank without a trace. She was then part of Dream Team tour along with Alia Bhatt, Parineeti Chopra, Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, Aditya Roy Kapoor etc and no prizes for guessing she was the top news maker and a crowd puller among all. Coming Friday will see the release of her upcoming film Baar Baar Dekho. She has survived for almost thirteen years in an industry where things changes in the course of a release. And is still going strong, says a lot about the fighter she is, the hard worker she is.
