Deepika Padukone’s Padmavati, Sonakshi Sinha’s Noor – 9 movies of 2017 where the girls will rule the roost
As a Bollywood movie buff, 2016 has been kinda a mixed bag for me. There were a few really good movies, followed by the ‘same ol same ol’ formulaic stuff that Bollywood has been churning out every year. However, 2016, like 2015, has also been a year where some really good movies were made with the female gender as its crux of either its plot or its cast. The best movie of the year, for me at least, Neerja, had Sonam Kapoor in the lead, and was based on the final moments of the braveheart Pan Am air hostess, Neerja Bhanot. there was the sweet Nil Battey Sannata, that actually talks about women empowerment in the rural areas without being preachy. Though Parched was a little rough at the edges, it explored the idea of sexual freedom for women, again in the rural regions. Then there is PINK that addressed the relevant topic of how women with modern outlook as seen as ‘unpure’ by a traditionalist society. Dear Zindagi might be a commercial venture that needed a Shah Rukh Khan to promote the same, but it was primarily an Alia Bhatt movie where a senior actor and bigger star than her was content playing supporting role to her.
This wonderful trend continues in 2017 as well, as there are some really exciting movies where we get to see the ladies get the top billing. Here are nine of those…
Begum Jaan

Vidya Balan stars in this Bollywood remake of the 2015 Bengali film Rajkahini, where she plays the owner of a brothel during the partition of India in 1947. Apart from Vidya, the movie also boasts of some powerhouse performers like Gauhar Khan, Naseeruddin Shah and Chunkey Pandey, who is playing the main antagonist. Vidya Balan has always been adept at playing author backed roles, so this looks like a pretty exciting and intense affair.
Phillauri

After NH 10, Anushka Sharma produces and stars in this hatke comedy that is set around the backdrop of a wedding, and also stars Diljit Dosanjh and Suraj Sharma of Udta Punjab and Life of Pi fame respectively. If reports are to be believed, she is playing a witch in the movie that’s directed by debutant Anshai Lal.

Taapsee Pannu’s character in the 2015’s hit Baby found a lot of admirers for its strong portrayal, even though the role was basically an extended cameo. Now she will take the center stage in the spinoff based on the character, that will now have Akshay Kumar in an extended cameo reprising his role from the original here as well.
Noor

Rarely do Bollywood adapt books as its source for screenplay, so Noor is quite an exciting proposition for book cum movie lovers like me. Adapted from Pakistani author Saba Imtiaz’s novel Karachi, You’re Killing Me!, Sonakshi Sinha plays the lead role of a journalist, while the setting changes from Karachi to Mumbai (for quite obvious reasons).
Haseena: The Queen of Mumbai

The much talked about biopic on Dawood Ibrahim’s sister Haseena Parkar finally starts shooting. Though Sonakshi Sinha was supposed to play the lead, she was been replaced Shraddha Kapoor who will play the title, while her brother Siddhant Kapoor will play the dreaded don Dawood. This is Shraddha’s first movie where she is the prime focus after her Luv Ka The End, so it’s quite an acid test for the young actress.

Three time National award winning actress Kangana Ranaut join forces with National award winning director Hansal Mehta (Shahid) for this real-life based drama. According to reports, Kangana will be seen as a 30-year-old divorcee in the upcoming movie.
Tumhari Sulu

Vidya Balan will again take on the lead role as well as the title character in Tumhari Sulu. She plays a late night RJ in the movie, that’s directed by Suresh Triveni.
Mom
Sri-Devi-Nawazuddin

After a fascinating comeback in English Vinglish, Sridevi is all set to return with her second movie in her second innings that’s just called Mom. Produced by her hubby Boney Kapoor, the movie also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Akshaye Khanna in the movie that’s directed by Ravi Udyawar.
Padmavati
Deepika-Padmavatiii
Though Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor play important roles in the movie, Padmavati ultimately belongs to Deepika Padukone, who plays the title role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s take on the popular historical folklore. It is also reported that Deepika Padukone is given the highest fees paid for any actress in Bollywood for this movie, and her salary is even greater than that of Ranveer and Shahid’s.
As the year progresses, we are sure we will be adding more names to this list…
