Harshvardhan Kapoor on Diljit Dosanjh: I loved Udta Punjab, and Diljit was brilliant

Harshvardhan Kapoor looks like one of the few celebs who doesn’t love the label of ‘politically correct’. It’s great to have celebs like him who speak straight from their hearts, but such talks can often have its own repercussions, and they mostly are not so great. He found himself in a spot of bother after the recently concluded Filmfare awards. The reason – he was not happy on losing out to Diljit Dosanjh winning the Best Debut Male award for Udta Punjab over his own performance in Mirzya that were both released in 2016.
Harshvardhan Kapoor has made it clear quite a few times that he didn’t say it because Diljit’s performance was anyway inferior to his; it’s just that Diljit has been working in Punjabi movies for long, and he is an actual newcomer, so he deserves the merit. During a recent interview with Mid-Day, he has this to say, “One can have an opinion. It’s not like I called out everyone who didn’t like Mirzya. In fact, I loved Udta Punjab, and Diljit was brilliant. The point I was making was very different.” We do agree what he says makes sense, but then this has happened before too, when Dhanush (Raanjhanaa) and Fawad Khan (Khoobsoorat) also won the same award (interestingly, both movies also starred Sonam Kapoor), even when they have done other movies before in regional cinema. Dhanush has even won a National Award for Aadukalam.
In the same interview, Harshvardhan also spoke about how his words have just been blown out of proportion, as he said, ” I have learnt much in the last few days. Firstly, that there is a time and place to say something. When you say something, you may not mean it in the way it is perceived. It’s like Chinese whispers. I say something, you publish something, and the person reading it perceives it differently. I have to be more diplomatic.”
