The Dabangg actress is ready to go solo on silver screen…
After having debuted opposite Salman Khan in Dabangg, Sonakshi Sinha went on to work with several biggies in Bollywood. Sonakshi has been fortunate to share screen space with Akshay Kumar, Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh all actors who are on top of their game right now. The actress even managed bag a film opposite Rajinikanth. However, Sonakshi’s last release Tevar opposite Arjun Kapoor failed to perform and this time she returns to the silver screen without having the backing or support of a hero. While it is commendable, the film’s fate at the box office will prove if Sonakshi manages to deliver a hit and carry a film single-handedly on her strong shoulders. Here’s BollywoodLife’s review of Akira…What’s it about:
Akira is a remake of the Tamil film Mouna Guru. The reprise has Sonakshi Sinha play the lead role. AR Muragadoss who has been the man behind blockbusters like Ghajini and Holiday. This time around he’s set his film around a female protagonist who does everything like any conventional hero. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the original had a male action star in the lead cause Akira’s focus on fight sequences is heavy. Sonakshi plays a small town girl who comes to Mumbai only to get caught up in a nexus headed by a corrupt cop played exceptionally by Anurag Kashyap. She’s a believer of action and not words and once she decides to set things right she does become the action hero the film poster ever so boisterously promote. Konkona Sen Sharma plays a pregnant lady police officer whose track is as murky as the films climax. Akira isn’t a thinking mans film. It is massy, loud, over the top in certain frames and has a plot that seems lifted from any other action film set in the 90s.
What’s hot:
Let’s talk about Sonakshi for a bit. Unlike her peers and contemporaries, Sonakshi has managed to stay a darling of the masses despite the recent debacles. Her likeability stems from the fact that she like her father knows how to play to the gallery. Her dialogue delivery has a punch and in Akira she gets to use that to her advantage. Sonakshi shows promise not so much in the action scenes but the ones where she confronts Kashyap who by the way is the real reason why you might end up liking this film. There is no denying the fact that his role is the meatiest and the one that has the most swag. Not falling in the trap of the cliches he manages to make his corrupt cop act his own by the lecherous gaze or his care a damn attitude. It’s clear that he’s had a lot of fun doing this film and it shows. Akira has some really good action scenes in the second half and Konkona’s character keeps you wondering what she will do next till the interval. If you have a palette for southern cinema and the way those films are packaged then Akira has oodles of masala.
What’s not:
The issue with Akira is that it strives too hard to become an action entertainer. There is that novelty factor by having an actress as the action lead, but somehow Akira’s punches and kicks feel too rehearsed. Also it’s a cliche ridden film, especially the first half where we see Akira learn martial arts while growing up. The track with her brother and his family fails to develop and it becomes more of a hurdle than a bridge. Music is strictly average and none of the songs help the story progress. The only character that you might be interested in is Kashyap’s cop, but he too becomes a caricature towards the rushed climax. Predictability and bad dialogues don’t give the narrative any scope to grow on you.
What to do:
Akira might entertain Sonakshi Sinha fans, but if you are an action lover then the film doesn’t really have much to offer.
