Jackie Chan’s Kung Fu Yoga to lock horns with SRK’s Raees and Hrithik’s Kaabil
While Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees and Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil are all set to clash on January 25, a day before Republic Day, a new contender has raised his head. Going by the recently outed promos, Jackie Chan’s Kung Fu Yoga (KFY) is due to release on January 28 and battle it out with the two Hindi biggies on the same weekend.
Hot hub
Says an observer, “While the promo clearly indicates KFY’s release date (it’s a Saturday), it might just change to a regular Friday to take advantage of the long weekend. While the announcement is China-specific, given India’s position as the hot hub for the global release of major international films, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a day-and-date release here.”
Indian connect
It makes sense to do that in KFY’s case, as a major part of the Chinese film was shot in India and features Indian actors (Sonu Sood, Disha Patani and Amyra Dastur). A bilingual (Mandarin and English), it will have Chan playing an archaeology professor from China, who collaborates with Indians to locate India’s lost Magadha treasure in Tibet. “Sonu has been actively promoting the film since beginning shooting for it a few months back, this is Disha’s second film and a comeback of sorts for Amyra after 2015’s Mr X, starring Emraan Hashmi. The film is a Sino-Indian collaboration, which means that it is bound to see a major release in the country,” a trade source adds.
Chan’s coming!
Also, Chan is slated to arrive in India, mid-January to promote the film. He is a traditionally popular star and is much loved in this country. “The challenge, though, for the distributors would be to figure out how to accommodate Kung Fu Yoga alongside Raees and Kaabil, if at all KFY were to release on the Republic Day weekend itself,” an insider wonders.
Not enough screens
The problem, says the source, is that “there are 5000-odd prominent screens across the country and these, too, are less for both Raees and Kaabil to fit in. If at all KFY had to arrive on the same date, even on a conservative scale, it would warrant 500-plus more screens.”
