Rishi Kapoor on the fire that gutted R K Studios: Costumes worn by Nargis to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are lost

Last weekend was disastrous for the Kapoors whose legacy R K Studios got badly burnt in a fire. The sets of Super Dancer also completely collapsed. It’s obviously traumatising to see your father’s legacy up in flames but Rishi Kapoor is still in denial. While talking to Mumbai Mirror, the actor got very emotional explaining what it means for the family who treasured it for so many years. He said, “I still cannot believe it. I’m partially in denial even now.” It’s something the whole film industry is proud of as that’s the ground where a lot of blockbusters were mounted which shaped Bollywood. Rishi Kapoor reveals what all they have lost apart from the emotional loss.

Rishi Kapoor says, “There were costumes from every RK film, from Awaara to Chalen. Most of the stuff was kept neatly in trunks and some of it was even labelled. The costumes worn by every RK heroine, from Nargis to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, is lost. The jewellery worn by Padmini in Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai was also stored here with a lot of love. There were spears, sabres, artefacts, furniture and other regalia used for the various shoots. The Mera Naam Joker mask and clothes… Dabboo and I couldn’t believe what hit us. This is probably why they say that one should never put all eggs in one basket. But for us, this was our father’s legacy, and it was a treasure trove.”
Talking about how Raj Kapoor had not got a house of his own till Bobby released, Rishi Kapoor said, “My father didn’t buy a home for his family until Bobby’s success. He put all his earnings into the studio because cinema was his religion.” For some one who has been frequenting the place for ’63 years’, it’s a loss he will hardly be able to recover from.
