Naagin 2, Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, Kumkum Bhagya: 5 strong elements of the top rated shows this week
Here's our analysis of the BARC Report of Week 18, 2017...
Sriti Jha and Shabbir Ahluwalia’s Kumkum Bhagya dethroned Naagin 2
from the No. 1 position in the 18th week (Saturday, 29th April 2017 to
Friday, 5th May 2017). Although Mouni Roy’s show retained its top
position in the urban areas, it dropped to the second spot in
the combined figures of rural plus urban. STAR Plus’ Yeh Rishta Kya
Kehlata Hai and Zee TV’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa were on the third and fourth
positions respectively. Vivian Dsena and Rubina Dilaik’s Shakti-Astitva
Ke Ehsaas Ki took the fifth spot in urban areas while Yeh Hai
Mohabbatein secured the fifth rank in the overall ratings.
Here are the top five elements that made these shows rank this week –
Good sub-plots
If you come to think of it then you’ll realize that it’s not the ‘poster couple’ whose story is being told in most of these shows. Be it Yeh Hai Mohabbatein or Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, it’s the secondary characters whose stories have got people interested. In YHM, it’s Ishita (Divyanka Tripathi) and Raman’s (Karan Patel) son Aadi’s (Abhishek Verma) forced marriage sequence that has earned the show a spot in the TRP charts.
Similarly Yeh Rishta.. is gradually moving towards the plot where Naira’s (Shivangi Joshi) brother Naksh will unite with Karthik’s (Mohsin Khan) sister Keerti, who is currently in an abusive relationship with her husband.
Heavy romance
You can get the leads kidnapped, molested or even killed but it’s the romance between the lead couple that keeps the show going on. That’s the exact reason why parents of three kids, Raman and Ishita, go out on romantic dinner dates! Because, Indian audience never gets bored of romance. It’s the evergreen formula of getting ratings. Ofcourse there are shows like Beyhadh, which are doing great without ‘romance’ but then anomalies exist in all systems. In Shakti Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki, Harman (Vivian Dsena) and Soumya (Rubina Dilaik) might be battling social evils on the forefront but it’s their chemistry that has retained people’s interest in the show.
Same goes for shows like Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi, Yeh Rishta.., Ishqbaaz, Udaan and ChandraNandini. They might not be regular visitors of the TRP charts but the chemistry of the lead couples in the shows have earned them a lot of fan following.
Strong male leads
Indian television shows thrive on their bahus, betiyaan, maayein and saasein. The makers quite unapologetically glorify women’s issues more than men’s problems. But in an establishment like this, there are a few male characters like that of Harman, Dev (Shaheer Sheikh, Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi), Shivaay Singh Oberoi (Nakuul Mehta, Ishqbaaz), Chandragupta Maurya (Rajat Tokas, Chandranandini) and Shani (Kartikey Malviya, Shani) who have managed to stand their grounds. The actors not only enjoy equal screen space in these shows but also get to do the tasks, which were earlier reserved for the bahu/beti of the house. Let’s say the man on television have just got manlier. (wink*)
Reconciliation
There is a possibility of a final reunion between Abhi (Shabbir Ahluwalia) and Pragya (Sriti Jha) in Kumkum Bhagya and this has got the show’s loyal fans very very excited. Similary in Kuch Rang.., Ishwari (Supriya Pilgaonkar), who was instrumental in #Devakshi’s separation, has finally decided to get Sona (Erica Fernandes) and Dev married and the fans are on the top of the world.
First hate each other to death, fall hopelessly in love, get separated for some stupid reason, reunite after a gap of five years – There, you have a perfect script for a daily soap!
Marriage drama
Marriage dramas are the best (read easiest). Take a couple, buy fancy clothes, hire some extras who can dance in the baraat and you are set for a month. And I am not even kidding. That’s what they do these days. Karthik and Naira’s wedding continued for a got damn month, or maybe two! And I am pretty sure that Pragya and Abhi ain’t no getting married anytime soon.
