Ram Gopal Varma asked by High Court to compensate Sarkar 3 writer

On January 30, 2017, scriptwriter Nilesh Girkar filed a suit against Ram Gopal Varma, accusing him of denying credits for the film’s script and non-payment of the full amount of Rs 8 lakh, as promised by the filmmaker. Finally, today, the court has ruled in favour of the scriptwriter and asked the filmmaker to pay the remaining amount as well as to give him credit for the film’s script.
Earlier, on February 12, RGV was asked to deposit payment of Rs 6.20 lakh as settlement. On March 17, RGV was asked to hold a private screening of the film. The private screening was asked so that Girkar could check if his script was used or not.
Talking to Mid-Day about the same, Girkar’s lawyer, Rahul Ajatshatru said, “After the screening, we made a comparison chart and filed it in court on March 24, as directed. The opposite party was given five weeks to submit their arguments against our claims, but they failed to give any response.” He further added that the film’s opening credits will now mention, ‘Based on a story written by Nilesh Girkar.’
The lawyer added that the court also took into consideration that theirs wasn’t a last-minute plea to stall the film’s release. “Initially, the court was planning to give a stay order on the film, but later Varma’s lawyers agreed to give opening credits to my client apart from the monetary compensation.”
When Mid-Day reached out to Varma, he said, “We have to follow what the court has ordered.”
The third part in RGV’s Godfather-esque film series, Sarkar 3 follows the life of Subhash Nagre and the politics of power and one upmanship around him. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, Amit Sadh, Yami Gautam, Ronit Roy, Rohini Hattangadi, Manoj Bajpayee among others.
