Priyanka Chopra to explore Rabindranath Tagore’s love story in her next production

She may not have been seen in a Hindi film for more than a year now, but Priyanka Chopra was pretty active as a newly turned producer. After making her debut as a producer in Bhojpuri cinema with Bam Bam Bol Raha Kashi, in Marathi with multiple National Award Winning Ventilator, in Punjabi with Sarvann, she is awaiting the release of her Sikkimese film with Pahuna and Goan film with Little Joe. Not she is all set to venture into the History with a Bengali-Marathi bilingual based on the life of celebrated Bengali Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. But unlike what we have been reading about him, it will be about his love story.
The film will follow the story of of 17 year old Rabindranath Tagore who was staying with Dr Atmaram Pandurang Turkhud at his Mumbai-home. While staying there, the teenage Tagore fell in love with his 20-year-old daughter, Annapurna. She had just returned from England and since she was conversant with English etiquette and the language, she became his tutor. As the classes progressed, an intimacy developed between the teacher and her young student. On Annapurna’s insistence, he gave her the name Nalini, and immortalised her in a poem he wrote for her and set to music too. However, Tagore’s father did not approve of his lady love and the liaison ended. In 1880, Annapurna married a Scot, Harold Littledale, and the couple left for England.
“It was a platonic love story and the film will narrate it from the point of view of a young student, who visits modern-day Santiniketan and sees a picture of Annapurna captioned ‘Nalini’,” told National Award winning director Ujjwal Chatterjee to Mumbai Mirror. He further added, “Casting is in progress and the film is expected to go on the floors by October.”
The film was earlier titled Sound Of Silence, the Simon and Garfunkel’s classic song. They were supposed to make it a larger story with Tagore’s first love as only a part of the narrative. “But when we met Madhu Chopra (Priyanka’s producer mother) around two years ago, they wanted to know how much of the story was factually accurate and true. I showed them my research and they agreed to produce the film. It has since materialised into a saga of unrequited love,” concluded Ujjwal. Adding to that Madhu Chopra said, “Priyanka wants good stories to reach audiences. Nalini has great potential and is an entertaining subject. We’re happy to be associated with it.”
