Varun Dhawan fails to beat Hrithik Roshan and Sushant Singh Rajput at the box office on Gandhi Jayanti

Today in Bollywood, there’s a film for every festive occasion. While Diwali, Christmas, Eid, Independence Day are prominent occasions there are a few others that tend to go unnoticed. Varun Dhawan‘s Judwaa 2  along with being a Dussehra release  (September 29th) had the advantage of an extended weekend thanks to Gandhi Jayanti on October 2. With the extended holiday weekend, the movie has grossed Rs 77.25 crore in total and Rs 18 crore just on October 2. However, despite the opening blitzkrieg, the film has not been the highest grossing film on Gandhi Jayanthi. If we are to compare Judwaa 2’s Monday figures with other Gandhi Jayanti releases, the movie falls fifth in line, failing to beat MS Dhoni: The Untold Story (2106), Singh is Bliing (2015), Bang Bang (2014), Besharam (2013).
As per box office figures in the last four years, Hrithik Roshan’s Bang Bang is the highest Gandhi Jayanti grosser so far, as it had earned a whopping Rs 27.54 crore, followed by MS Dhoni: The Untold Story that grossed Rs 24 crore. Ranbir’s dud Besharam (Rs 21.56 crore) and Akshay Kumar’s Singh Is Bliing  (Rs 20.67 crore) take the third and fourth positions respectively. So it’s a bit of a shocker that Judwaa 2 couldn’t even manage to beat the critically mauled Besharam, even with all the hype and the hoopla.
Having said that, if we were to look at the overall collections, Judwaa 2 is fast heading towards the Rs 100 crore mark. The film has already crossed the Rs 75 crore mark. The movie got off to a great start on opening day itself, as it raked in money well above expectations. Owing to the positive word-of-mouth among Varun Dhawan fans, Salman Khan’s cameo and the nostalgia factor around Judwaa 2, the film is likely to remain rock steady at the box office. From the looks of it, Judwaa 2 is all set to be Varun Dhawan’s second Rs 100 crore movie of this year.
